Apart from the academic and intellectual development of its students, Achimota School emphasizes practical skills and character training. The school runs on a two-semester academic calendar from September to August.

The General Science programme comprises of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and ICT departments, while the General Arts programme comprises of English Language, English Literature, French, Government, History, Economics, Geography, Christian Religious Studies and Social Studies. The Music School is responsible for teaching Music, training the Aggrey Chapel Choir and organizing Achimota’s famed annual music festivals. The Art School houses the Visual Arts department. The Home Science Unit houses the Home Economics department.
In their first two years, students must take physical education, French and ICT every semester. Each student takes eight subjects during their third and final year, in addition to four electives chosen from one programme of study. Each student must take four core subjects: Mathematics, English Language, Integrated Science and Social Studies.
The school’s three-year programme (six semesters) leads to the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), in any of General Sciences, Agricultural Science, General Arts, Visual Arts and Home Economics, all administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in June of their final year.
Achimota School welcomes every high-achieving student who desires a holistic training of the Head, the Hand and the Heart. The motto of the school, Ut Omnes Unum Sint (That They All May Be One) underpins the institution’s philosophy of integration and acceptance of one another for the common good. The meaning of the piano-key design of our school crest—the interdependence of our varied national and international cultures—was aptly summarised by Dr. James Kwegyir Aggrey when he said: "You can play a tune of sorts on the black keys only; and you can play a tune of sorts on the white keys only; but for perfect harmony, you must use both the black and the white keys.”
Truly able students from junior high schools both in Ghana and abroad would do well to make Achimota School their first-choice senior high school in order to join this special community of academic and humanitarian scholars and seekers.
Achimota School, like all other public schools under the mandate of the Ghana Education Service, receives a list of students selected on the basis of their performance on the BECEthrough the Computerized School Selection Placement System (CSSPS).
Foreign students must contact the Ghana Education Service for the details of the placement procedure. Foreign students are not, at this time, eligible for free tuition under the Free Senior High School Programme introduced by the Government of Ghana in [year]
